Firearm and Dangerous Weapons Amnesty

The Comité des Connétables is conducting a review of firearms as part of the Parishes & Government Review.

The Comité des Connétables are offering islanders a safe, confidential and lawful way to surrender unwanted firearms and dangerous weapons by preparing an Island-Wide Firearm and Dangerous Weapons Amnesty.

The Amnesty, which will run for the whole month of November 2026, provides an opportunity for islanders to safely and voluntarily surrender unwanted firearms, ammunition, firearms parts and other dangerous weapons.

Speaking about the amnesty, head of the Comité des Connétables, Connétable Andy Jehan, said: “The amnesty is intended for anyone who has a firearm or dangerous weapon that they are no longer entitled to possess or no longer wish to keep. It’s a safe opportunity to surrender unwanted weapons.”

“As a Comité des Connétables, we recognise the importance of making the offer of an amnesty, with the aim of making the surrender process straightforward, lawful, accessible and safe for all members of the public who want to surrender a firearm, rather than continuing to keep it.”

“Importantly, the amnesty provides protection from prosecution for possession of an unregistered firearm or other weapon, firearms parts or ammunition where the purpose of possession is to surrender the item(s) under the amnesty.”

There is no cost to members of the public for the surrender and destruction of firearms or other weapons under the amnesty.

Connétable Andy Jehan added: “People may find themselves in possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon that they no longer wish to retain. This may happen, for example, following an inheritance, the closure of a collection, or a change in personal circumstances. I would encourage anyone who wishes to make use of the amnesty throughout November.”

Dangerous weapons include but not limited to knives, bullets, axes, swords, spear guns, BB guns, bows and arrows. Other items such as maces, pepper sprays, antique and decorative weapons are also accepted.

The Firearms Review will include a new application form, a review of the fees and a reduction in air rifle pressure (to prohibit owning and importing/owning an air rifle above 12-lb of muzzle energy as this is the standard pressure used when competing in air rifle clubs)
